       Five organisations wanted to have their own environmental award. Dato’ Kok Wee Kiat Former President of BCSDM at that time persuade all organisations to adopt a common approach with a standard set of criteria that the government would be happy to support.

The Award was named the “Hibiscus Award”. The decision to name the award after the national flower was based on the fact that there were five founding members organisations a reflection of the five petals of the hibiscus.

One of the foreign based members ceased operations in Malaysia leaving the other four actively involved in the award. They were BCSDM ENSEARCH FMM and MICCI.


The logistical issues eventually paved the way for the setting up of a dedicated secretariat located on the premises of the MICCI. Dato Kok’ Wee Kiat was appointed as the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Awardhe way for the setting up of a dedicated secretariat t located on the premises of the MICCI. 1996 - HIBISCUS AWARD INAUGURATED

       Hibiscus Award inaugurated. Challenge Trophy was to be awarded to the participant with the highest score. LE’s and SME’s competed on same criteria. There were 12 participants and Motorola Malaysia Sdn Bhd received the Challenge Trophy for their Exceptional Achievement.

15 participants but none received the Exceptional Achievement. The Committee refused to compromise the quality of the Award since no one met the criteria.

1998

The Award received recognition from the Government and Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad (now Tun) allowed the Award to be known henceforth as “Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award”.

Due to overwhelming participation, the Award changed from a yearly format to an 18 month basis format.

The new cycle started with 35 participants. Fairchild Semiconductor (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd scored the hight but with an Exceptional Achievement.

  • The Award received the highest number of participation in the history of the Award, 80 participations.

  •  Special Project Award category was introduced. Participation in this category is VOLUNTARY to all participants. The best theme based project under the scope described will be the winner.

Acidchem International, bagged the overall PMHA Challenge Trophy in a field of 54 contenders. Located in Prai, it is the only company selected for Excellent Achievement after a gap of 10 years, and only the fourth ever to meet the mark in the history of the award.
